Moving forward a few years to make the point that in my opinion, Kaduna was the location the Biafra war started. I feel very strongly that the balance of our staff in Kano with a preponderance of very good Ibo staff was at the heart of this problem. One indigenous community trying to address the imbalance as has been the case in many parts of Africa. One usually looks back with positive memories and this must be the case in respect of Kano. Katie and Ian seemed to thrive, Daphne as usual made a number of friends and it was a good posting for my introduction to a new part of the business.

I never quite took to the harmattan winds and dry conditions of the north, preferring the more humid south.

Early in 1959, I received a letter informing me I should proceed on leave and upon my return, I would be posted to Aba in Eastern Nigeria.
